Easy DIY Natural Cleaning Products
June 13, 2018Make your home smell as good as it looks with these easy, all natural, 5-ingredient cleaning products and air fresheners.
While we’re mainly about food here at HelloFresh, we’d never deny getting a little house proud. Of course, when you love whole, fresh, seasonal ingredients as much as we do, it breaks your heart a little to have to break out the industrial grade bleach and scary chemicals to clean your kitchen. Fortunately, this do it yourself household cleaner and air freshener are low on the nasties and big on beautiful scents and easy to source household items.
That’s not to say they won’t do the job – your grandma’s probably been using good ol’ white vinegar and baking soda to clean things since before you were a spark in the corner of someone’s eye. And there’s a reason these more gentle formulas are so popular and long lasting – they work! Particularly if you suffer from allergies or reactions from chemicals, swapping out cleaners for your own DIY concoctions can offer a lot of relief. Even if you keep the big guns around for really big messes, using these for your regular clean will dial back the harshness and give you citrus smelling serenity instead!
Citrus All-Purpose Cleaner
Because white vinegar is 5% acetic acid, it kills bacteria and viruses (with the help of a little elbow grease). For this cleaner, we neutralized the strong, vinegar-y odor with a trifecta of citrusy essential oils: orange, grapefruit, and lemon.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 16-Oz (or 450mL) spray bottle
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup distilled water
- 3 drops orange essential oil
- 3 drops grapefruit essential oil
- 3 drops lemon essential oil
Here’s what you’ll do:
Pour all ingredients into the spray bottle, using a funnel if necessary. Gently shake before using.
Lavender Air Freshener
Baking soda is the jack of all trades when it comes to your kitchen — unclogging drains, removing oil and grease, deodorising the fridge (and compost bins, cutting boards, and litter boxes), and generally freshening up the air. Unlike a hardcore synthetic air freshener, you can spray and spray to your heart’s content without worrying about gassing up the place.
Just like with the cleaner, this air freshener makes ample use of fragrant essential oils. This time, lavender and lemon, a combination that is both invigorating and calming in equal measure.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 16-Oz (or 450mL) spray bottle
- 2 cups distilled water
- 1 tbs baking soda
- 7 drops lavender essential oil
- 3 drops lemon essential oil
Here’s what you’ll do:
Pour all ingredients into the spray bottle, using a funnel if necessary. Gently shake before using.
