Broccoli’s bloody brilliant. It’s alliterative so it must be true. In honour of our green and purple sprouting friend, we’ve gone on a fact finding mission to shine the spotlight on broccoli.

Mum may have always said to eat your greens, but did you know that the colour of veggies can actually indicate the fabulous nutrients within? Purple sprouting broccoli is one of the most nutritious vegetables available. It’s packed full of vitamin C, folate, potassium, iron and vitamin E. It can also protect your body against carcinogens and other toxins. Of course, sometimes it’s hard to see the forest for the trees. Besides all of the mineral magic going on inside broccoli, there are plenty of other reasons to love this vegetable.

The word broccoli stems from the Latin brachium, which means ‘branch’ or ‘arm’.

These tasty little guys do look treelike, but did you know their tops are actually little buds?
Mature heads of broccoli will eventually burst forth into a bouquet of bright
    yellow blooms!

The American film producer, Albert R. Broccoli, famous for producing the James Bond
movies, claimed his family invented broccoli. This has been judged a highly dubious claim
    by most experts.

On March 18, 1990 President H.W. Bush had broccoli banned from Air Force One. He
declared that he had always hated the vegetable, and announced that as the President
of the United States, he would no longer be eating them!

Broccoli is a cool weather crop, so it’s perfect for a hit of emerald green when other leafy
    veg aren’t as readily available.
