Savour the season: 3 summer fruits and vegetables we’re loving right now

by Annie How to cook

Summer is in full swing and that can only mean one thing: now is the perfect time to whip up a storm in the kitchen with some deliciously fresh summer fruit and vegetables.

With so many exciting seasonal ingredients to celebrate this time of year, it can be hard to pick just a few as our favourites. But we did! Zucchini, cherry tomatoes and snow peas are each bursting with fresh, unique flavours that we are absolutely loving right now. Summer cooking with these seasonal staples not only guarantees superior flavour and peak freshness, but it’s also a more sustainable way to fill your plate.

Locally grown seasonal produce requires less transportation, which means fewer carbon emissions from long-distance shipping. Plus, seasonal produce tends to be more abundant during its peak harvest time, meaning that farmers can grow larger quantities without relying on artificial processes.

    Zucchinis

Why we love zucchinis in summer

Sometimes known as courgettes or summer squash, zucchinis are an incredibly versatile summer vegetable that can be used in a range of meals including salads, soups, pastas, pizzas, skewers and even brownies! Thanks to their high water content and ability to take on flavour, they are the perfect way to sneak in a little extra greenery into your diet.

    How to store zucchinis

To make sure your zucchinis stay fresh for longer, store them in your fridge’s crisper drawer. You can store them in a paper or plastic bag, but make sure to leave one end open to encourage air circulation. And most importantly, avoid washing your zucchinis until just before you’re ready to use them!

    Cherry Tomatoes

Why we love cherry tomatoes in summer

These small, juicy fruits (yes, fruits!) are bursting with color and flavour, plus loads of antioxidants. The perfect balance of sweet and acidic, cherry tomatoes are a delicious way to bring a vibrancy and zing to every meal. Great for adding fresh flavours to salads, balancing pastas, topping pizzas and so much more, these little bites pack a big punch.

    How to store cherry tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes are delicate, so it’s best to avoid the fridge. Instead, leave them in their container or transfer them to a bowl and store them on the kitchen bench or in your pantry. This will ensure your tomatoes keep their colour and flavour.
