Make your own Halloween costume: part 1

Halloween is just around the corner and if you’re anything like us here at HelloFresh HQ, you’ll be starting to get costumed up for the night (when you’re not planning ghoulish finger food).

With a little ingenuity and some cardboard boxes, you too can be the proud owner of a Spartan sword and shield!

This costume is super simple, and depending on how you choose to decorate it, it could be anything from a Medieval knight to Joan of Arc!

You’ll Need:

• A few split pin fasteners
• Some string
• A pencil
• PVA glue
• Paint brush
• Scissors
• Your Trusty HelloFresh cardboard box!
• Paint, tissue paper or foil, for decorating

To make the sword, all you need to do is cut out a basic shape, pointed blade at one end and whatever shaped handle at the other end you’d like. We then covered our sword in foil, and used tissue paper and glitter for the handle.

To make this HF shield, start with the largest side of the cardboard box. Roughly find the centre of this piece, and then using string, mark the closest edge from the centre. Using a pin, fasten the string to the middle of the cardboard piece.

At the other end where you marked the closest edge, tie the string around a pencil. Holding the pin in place, gently move the pencil around, keeping the string taut to make a perfect circle for the shield. Then cut around the circle shape you’ve made.

To make a handle for the back of the shield, cut a rectangle about 20cm x 5cm. Attach each end to the back of shield, about 15cm apart, using split pin fasteners or masking tape for a kid friendly version. The back can look as messy as you like! It’s all about the wow factor on the front of the shield.

We used PVA glue mixed with water to paint on tissue paper for our bold red shield. Then, we cut out letters from foil and glued them onto the face of the shield, and finished it with some gold glitter piping around the edge.
