Unsure about what food goes where in your fridge?

Keep your cool! How to store food safely in the fridge

Knowing how and where to store food correctly is a question coming from many HelloFresh customers. So, if you’re wondering “where do potatoes live?” and “should I keep my meats and veggies separate?”, here’s a handy refrigerator cheat sheet to help you unpack your HelloFresh box even more easily.

How to store your food

Top Shelf

Ready-to-eat foods such as cooked meats, fresh pasta and chilled sauces should be stored on the top shelf. These should all be covered or kept in air-tight containers to prevent contamination. Snacks and leftovers can also be stored here, away from raw foods so that bacteria doesn’t transfer between the raw and cooked foods.

Bottom Shelf

Raw meats like chicken, fish, and poultry should be stored on the bottom shelf. This is to prevent them from touching or dripping onto other foods, and to avoid cross-contamination. Make sure that these items are wrapped or in a covered container.

Salad Drawer

Fruits need a drier environment than vegetables, so it’s best to keep your fruit and veggies in separate compartments.

  • High Humidity Drawer: broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, green onions, leafy greens
  • Low Humidity Drawer: apples, ripe avocados, grapes, peaches, pears, ripe melons, peppers

Fridge Door

Keep things such as condiments, milk, juices, butter and eggs in the fridge door.

What to store in the kitchen cupboard

  • Dried ingredients: lentils, rice, pasta etc
  • Cans and cartons: coconut milk, kidney beans, passata, etc
  • Dried spices

All food products vary. The instructions printed on the food packaging always supersedes those printed in this article and must always be followed.
