The thing is, with a few simple tips and cooking techniques you will be perfecting and enjoying fish in no time. Read on to find out how to cook salmon, 3 easy ways!
How to Cook ‘Crispy Skin’ Salmon
Are you struggling to get your salmon just the way you would like..!? Does it either turn out undercooked or overcooked with burnt or soggy skin!? We hear you, but think with these couple of pointers you will be cooking restaurant quality salmon in no time!
Step 1. Make sure the fillets are dry – use a paper towel to pat each one dry. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
Step 2. Heat a non-stick fry pan over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and when hot add the fish to the pan skin-side down. Use an egg flipper to press the slamon down into the pan to stop it from curling up.
Step 3. Leave the salmon to cook for 2-3 minutes. When the colour change reaches three-quarters up the side of the fish – turn and cook for another 30 seconds.
How to Cook ‘Oven-Baked’ Salmon
This is such an easy way to cook salmon and leaves you with very minimal mess. It’s almost set and forget… (just don’t forget to set your oven timer!) The cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your salmon – the best way to check is to insert a knife into the thickest part of the salmon and gently twist to see if it is cooked to your liking. The flakes should easily separate when cooked.
Step 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C.
Step 2. Arrange the salmon fillets on a lined baking tray skin side down and top with finely chopped garlic, fresh herbs and a drizzle of olive oil. Sprinkle the fillets lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Step 3. Place into oven and cook salmon for around 10 mins depending on the thickness of your salmon.
How to Cook Salmon on the Barbeque
Barbequing salmon in parcels is perfect when cooking for a crowd. You can load lots of salmon fillet parcels onto the BBQ or even cook a whole side of salmon this way. The great thing about this technique is that the fish stays lovely and moist, making you look like a total pro and once cooked, you just put the foil straight into the bin. Absolutely no cooking mess!!! The herby topping really gives the salmon a lift and you can experiment with the herbs and spices you use!
Step 1. Preheat barbeque to medium-high.
Step 2. Place a large sheet of foil on bench and top with baking paper. Place salmon on paper. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Fold baking paper and foil over salmon to enclose.
Step 3. Transfer parcel to barbeque. Close hood and cook for ~10 minutes (this will vary depending on the thickness of your salmon).
Step 4. Meanwhile, make your topping. This can either be cooked in the parcel or added later once the fish is cooked.
Step 5. Remove salmon from barbecue and rest for 5 minutes. Unwrap. Transfer to a serving platter and spread with topping and a good drizzle of lemon.
