How to Cook Baby Corn
June 11, 2024Discover how to get the best from baby corn, a great addition to a range of meals that can be cooked in several ways.
What is baby corn?
Also known as baby sweetcorn, baby corn is simply sweetcorn which is harvested early whilst the stalks are small. Typically, baby corn is eaten whole and makes a great accompanying ingredient in salads and stir fry, and often plays a starring role in Chinese cuisine.
Can you eat baby corn raw?
Yes, just like fully-grown sweetcorn, baby corn can be eaten raw and doesn’t have to be cooked at all. It should, however, be thoroughly washed before eating it – raw or cooked.
Raw baby corn is great for adding a crunchy texture to a salad and goes well with the flavours of other raw vegetables, such as peppers.
If you’d prefer to cook baby corn, then there are a few different ways to choose from.
How to steam baby corn
When cooking in a steamer, you should leave baby corn to cook for 5-6 minutes. This ensures it will be cooked until tender, still with a slight bite for added texture.
How to stir fry baby corn
Ideal for using in the heart of a stir fry, baby corn can be cooked in a frying pan with one tablespoon of olive oil. For an authentic stir fry, fry the corn for up to four minutes, continuously moving it around the pan.
For optimum taste, add red chillies, garlic and broccoli to the pan at the same time. Include a tablespoon of soy sauce and you’re on your way to an authentic Chinese stir fry.
Can you boil baby corn?
Yes, you can boil baby corn. Just like other vegetables, add your baby corn to a pan of boiling water, cover with a lid and leave it to simmer for up to five minutes until it reaches your preferred tenderness. It’s as simple as that.
How to microwave baby corn
Add the amount of baby corn you’re wanting to cook into a microwavable dish with 45ml of water and cover it safely. Cook in the microwave on full power for three minutes (add an extra minute for less powerful microwaves), then carefully remove the dish, drain the water and serve.
