Our ode to the fig
July 7, 2015We all love a good story. For me, stories with lots of intricacies, particularly the kind with dragons or seamonsters are the best. In Homer’s Odyssey, the Charybdis Fig Tree is of central heroic importance. When Odysseus (or Ulysees to some) and his men eat the Sun God’s livestock, it all gets a teensy bit ugly. Odysseus is the only survivor, and he makes a raft… but as he tries to escape he is dragged down by the terrifying seamonster, Charybdis. So, how does he escape? By grasping onto the helpful branch of the fig tree. A silent hero if ever there was one.
You see the fig in lots of stories – they are pretty ancient and are mentioned in the Bible, the Kuran, the Torah and hundreds of other ancient scriptures. They must be pretty great to be so highly acclaimed. But, what do our team say about figs? Read all about it…
