Are you looking for alternative ways to store leftovers? The HelloFresh team has pulled together some of our favorite plastic-free storage alternatives that are just as good (if not better) than plastic wraps. They’ll naturally store and protect food from moisture and air! Say goodbye (forever) to fiddly and hard-to-use glad wrap, and say hello to these earth-friendly ideas.

    Beeswax wraps

Not only do they come in awesome colors, they are much better for the environment and for keeping your food fresh. Beeswax wraps are made from cloth that has been coated with beeswax which makes the cloth rigid, so they’re perfect for covering bowls and wrapping around food.

Benefits: Beeswax wraps are a fun, cheap DIY activity. If you make them yourself you can choose the exact size wraps that will fit around your crockery.

Example: Put your leftover enchiladas on a flat plate and tightly wrap the beeswax wrap over the top and store in the fridge.

    Food storage containers

When it comes to food storage containers there are multiple brands and squillions of shapes and sizes. One of the main reasons we love containers is for their durability and because they last longer than food wraps and lids.

Benefits: They travel well in school bags (and hand bags!), Plus some are oven-proof which makes reheating leftovers a breeze.

Example: When cooking our dinner to lunch recipes, divide the lunch part of the meal into two glass storage containers and store in the fridge. At lunchtime you can simply microwave the meal until it’s piping hot!

    Reuse glass jars

Glass jars with a resealable lid are excellent for storing all sorts of food, and they are easy to come by. Before using them for food storage, just be sure to wash and sterilize them.

Benefits: They come in all sorts of sizes, which makes food portioning easy.

Example: Jars are an easy way to store leftover salad . Plus, the resealable lid means you will avoid the any spillage.

    Plate on bowl method

Simply put the leftovers in a bowl with a plate on top and store in the fridge.

Benefits: Easy and you don’t have to purchase anything new.

Example: Perfect for when you have a single serving of spag bol left.

    Silicone lids

The fancy alternative to putting a plate on top of a bowl. These covers create an airtight seal as soon as they’re placed on a smooth surface.

Benefits: Silicone lids come in a variety of sizes and they are heat tolerant. You can put them in the microwave and avoid leftovers spitting everywhere.

Example: Place on top of your veggie curry leftovers. You won’t have to worry about transferring to a container with a heat proof lid when it comes to heating up. Simply place the bowl and silicone lid in the microwave and say goodbye to food splatters.

There’s plenty of alternatives to glad wrap and it can all come down to how creative you can get in the kitchen. Let us know if you have any other food storage suggestions!
