5 Minute Hummus recipe (because there’s no such thing as too much hummus!)

Have you ever made a hummus promise? It’s an unbreakable vow, and frankly it’s the only dip we’ll make blood oaths over (take note, business partners of the future).

This is our 5 minute hummus recipe, designed to bring people together over the deliciousness only the bond of chickpeas, tahini, lemon, garlic and salt can create.

    • 350g tinned chickpeas, drained and well rinsed
    • 1 tbsp tahini
    • 1  garlic clove
    • 2 tbsp lemon juice
    • 3 tbsp olive oil
    • sea salt, to taste
    • Sesame seeds, to garnish

Firstly, a note on your ingredients. This dish is so quick and easy, you can afford to make sure every element is worthy of this perfect dip. Make sure your chickpeas are very well drained and rinsed – the liquid in the tinned variety can add a flavour beyond the purity of the chickpeas, and should be avoided. Funnily enough, this liquid (dubbed ‘aquafava’ – literally bean water) is the perfect vegan substitute for whiskable egg whites! Reserve it in an airtight glass jar and it will beat up to hard peak stage beautifully – perfect for vegan meringues. It doesn’t taste like chickpeas either.

As for the tahini, the Lebanese traditionalist in me insists upon hulled tahini – it will give you the most authentic traditional flavour. Of course, if you prefer a more bitter edge you could use unhulled tahini. It’s completely up to you!

Add the chickpeas and garlic clove to your blender, and blend until you have a good consistency, with only a few bumps for texture (if you like your hummus very smooth, feel free to keep going until you’re happy!). Use a splash of water to loosen the chickpeas if needed. Add the rest of the ingredients, except the sesame seeds and blitz until the colour of the mixture has started to look lighter and creamy. Have a taste and adjust with a little more tahini, lemon or salt according to your taste preferences.

Garnish with sesame seeds, a little more olive oil, and some smoky paprika, if you like.

Eat up and enjoy with Turkish or Lebanese bread, carrot sticks, celery, or anything else you fancy!
